Abstract
Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was acknowledged by the World Health Organization in December 2019 based on an unknown case report of pneumonia in Wuhan. There is controversy about COVID-19 in children, where some studies have concluded that pediatric patients are less prevalent and severe than adults. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics portrayed that there was a ±30.85% cumulative increase in pediatric cases. Subsequently, 78% of pediatric patients in West Nusa Tenggara have severe symptoms. These are noteworthy due to the more atypical symptoms and the high mortality risk up to 40%. Thus, this study explores the difference of risk factors on occurrence of COVID-19 in children and adults. Method: The current cross-sectional study adopts purposive sampling a secondary database of COVID-19 infection data Siloam Hospitals Kelapa Dua. Data are analyzed through descriptive statistic and frequency. Results: There are differences in the characteristics of child and adult COVID-19 patients at Siloam Hospitals Kelapa Dua. This difference is mainly due to vaccination status where pediatric patients have never been vaccinated at all (45.45%) and pediatric patients have been vaccinated twice (45.45%) while adult patients have been vaccinated twice (71.83%). Another difference is in the economic status of patients where pediatric patients have an economic status of <1 million (100%) while adult patients have an economic status of 1-3 million (38%). For further differences there are family members who live together where child patients have 3-4 family members who live together (81.81%) while in adult patients have 1-2 family members who live together (32.4%). Conclusions: There is a difference in the incidence of COVID-19 from the variables taken in children and adults at Siloam Hospitals Kelapa Dua.
