Abstract

The use of computers increases once online learning is implemented. The use of computers can cause complaints to the eyes, one of which is Dry Eye Syndrome (DES). DES is a collection of eye symptoms that cause discomfort. Previous studies have examined the relationship between computer use and the incidence of Dry Eye Syndrome. However, results differed when it was about the duration of computer use and the incidence of Dry Eye Syndrome. Varied results also emerged when studies were conducted on different subjects. Objective: To determine the relationship between the duration of computer use and the incidence of dry eye syndrome during online learning among pre-clinical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Pelita Harapan University. Method: This study used a cross-sectional method to 164 pre-clinical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Pelita Harapan University. The questionnaire used was SANDE (Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye) and OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index). The data analysis used SPSS program. Result: Out of 164 respondents examined in this study, 79 people (89.8%) experienced the prevalence of DES on computer use with an average duration of 8 hours per day, and 84 people (88.4%) experienced DES prevalence in computer use with a duration of > 2 hours continuously at a time. The results of chi-square analysis show a significant relationship (p value 0.0001) between duration of computer use and DES. Conclusion: This study proves that there is a relationship between the duration of computer use and the incidence of Dry Eye Syndrome during online learning among preclinical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Pelita Harapan University.
