Abstract

Mexico is a country with a rich history and a significant cultural heritage. The country's culture is more pronounced in its arts, food, entertainment and film industries, education, as well as in its language. Due to its uniqueness, Mexico has been utilizing its culture as a diplomatic tool to express who they are, exercise their power, and create lasting alliances, particularly to the United States (US). In the context of US-Mexico bilateral relations, Mexico aims to reshape its image and build a better bilateral relationship through cultural diplomacy. Although they had a rough patch at first, their bilateral relationship has grown and is now quite important. As seen by their partnership, the US and Mexico engage in a wide range of non-official and diplomatic exchanges. It includes a wide range of cultural, educational, and commercial connections. Mexico is confident that culture will achieve their national interest because they believe that their country has a rich and extensive cultural legacy compared to other countries. Therefore, this research will analyze how Mexico uses its cultural diplomacy in achieving its national interest in the US in 2012 to 2021. The theory of Constructivism is used in this research, incorporated with concepts of Role of History, Soft Power, National Interest, and Cultural Diplomacy. Sample data are obtained through a literature study by collecting secondary data. The result of this research shows that Mexico has been partially successful in achieving their national interest, considering how Mexico's cultural diplomacy efforts still have room for improvement, and how soft power is a long-term solution. / Meksiko adalah negara dengan sejarah yang kaya dan warisan budaya yang signifikan. Budaya negara lebih menonjol dalam seni, makanan, hiburan dan industri film, pendidikan, serta bahasanya. Karena keunikannya, Meksiko telah memanfaatkan budayanya sebagai alat diplomasi untuk mengekspresikan siapa dirinya, menjalankan kekuasaannya, dan menciptakan aliansi yang langgeng, khususnya dengan Amerika Serikat (AS). Dalam konteks hubungan bilateral AS-Meksiko, Meksiko bertujuan untuk membentuk kembali citranya dan membangun hubungan bilateral yang lebih baik melalui diplomasi budaya. Meskipun pada awalnya mereka mengalami masa sulit, hubungan bilateral mereka telah tumbuh dan sekarang cukup penting. Seperti yang terlihat dari kemitraan mereka, AS dan Meksiko terlibat dalam berbagai pertukaran non-resmi dan diplomatik. Ini mencakup berbagai koneksi budaya, pendidikan, dan komersial. Meksiko yakin bahwa budaya akan mencapai kepentingan nasional mereka karena mereka percaya bahwa negara mereka memiliki warisan budaya yang kaya dan luas dibandingkan dengan negara lain. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini akan menganalisis bagaimana Meksiko menggunakan diplomasi budayanya dalam mencapai kepentingan nasionalnya di AS pada tahun 2012 hingga 2021. Teori Konstruktivisme yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini dipadukan dengan konsep Peran Sejarah, Soft Power, Kepentingan Nasional, dan Diplomasi Budaya. Sampel data diperoleh melalui studi literatur dengan mengumpulkan data sekunder. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Meksiko sebagian berhasil mencapai kepentingan nasional mereka, mengingat upaya diplomasi budaya Meksiko masih memiliki ruang untuk perbaikan, dan bagaimana soft power merupakan solusi jangka panjang.
