Abstract

The Melilla Migrant Crisis has gained the world’s attention in 2005 when an abnormal amount of African immigrants attempted to cross into Melilla by jumping over the fences. Over years the issue has grown into a humanitarian crisis in regards to how many immigrants are selected to cross into the European Union territory based on their selective immigration policy, and are mistreated in daily interaction and given unequal work opportunities. Immigrants in Ceuta and Melilla are given low class jobs that usually demand high physical labour and are all underpaid forcing them to work two jobs. Through the main issues of mistreatment towards immigrants in the EU region, this research relies heavily on the theory of Classical Liberalism and its advocacy for the protection of basic human rights and the belief that rights are universal to all. This research will be conducted through the qualitative approach by using the descriptive method. The data collected will then be analysed through case study analysis and collected through a secondary data technique. The mistreatment towards the immigrants will be analysed and classified as violations of human rights based on the internationally acknowledged document, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And with this the Melilla Migrant Crisis will be able to be classified as a humanitarian issue.
