Abstract

The Papua issue, which has not been resolved, has attracted the attention of countries in the South Pacific region such as Vanuatu to internationalize the Papua issue. Vanuatu has consistently and loudly raised this issue in various regional and international forums. This study aims to analyze Vanuatu's interests in its efforts to internationalize the issue of Papua through a regional organization in the Pacific region, namely the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG). Neoclassical Realism Theory is used to gain an understanding of Vanuatu's foreign policy on the Papua issue, by examining the internal and external factors considered by the Vanuatu government in formulating it. This study uses a descriptive research method to see the interests behind the internationalization carried out by Vanuatu. The results of this study indicate that the country of Vanuatu wants to be more reckoned with considering geographically this country is a small archipelagic country and very rarely gets the attention of other countries considering the pressure exerted by the dominant party and the people of Vanuatu and there is a tug-of-war between the major powers in the region.
