Abstract

Japan is known for its two images: the old and the new. Its old image is known for its bad reputation as an aggressor and remains despite its loss in World War 2. Realizing the bad reputation could interrupt Japan’s future activities, Japan started to change its image to the world. Therefore, this research centralizes on analyzing the process of rebranding Japan’s image, especially in its colonization countries, such as Indonesia, and its youth as the target of the process. The theory of Constructivism used in this research aligns with the concepts of Identity, Ideas, Public Diplomacy, Social Practice, and Soft Power; with a qualitative approach and descriptive historical-comparative research method. Data are obtained through a literature study and online research by collecting secondary data, then analyzed using the narrative technique. This research focuses on the activities in projecting Japan’s new identity. It constructs the new idea of “Cool Japan” to the world through soft power exposure implemented by an agency under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Japan Foundation, in its public diplomacy activities. These social practices emphasize creating mutual understanding through culture, language, and education. Furthermore, the effectiveness and impact of these activities on Indonesian youth are seen through Indonesian tourists and Indonesian youth that enroll in Japanese University that has been exposed to Japan’s soft power.
