Abstract

Studi ini menginformasikan bahwa tingkat ekonomi memainkan peran yang cukup besar dalam menentukan niat menikah di kalangan individu belum menikah di Indonesia./Marriage is one of the long-standing traditions subscribed by Indonesian society that brings with it not only the happiness of the couple, but also the reputation and happiness of the family. Initially, marriage was considered as a transaction between a husband, being commodity provider, and a wife, performing a domestic role. However, modernisation and series of socioeconomic transformation have resulted in the consistently increased women’s participation in working, which indicates a change of assumed role. The present quantitative study aims to explore the extent to which the intensity for being (un)married is influenced by the perceived economic stability, as well as the extent to which gender provides unique interaction patterns between economic stability and individual intensity for marriage. A total of 134 subjects (Musia = 26.35; SD = 5.149) participated in the survey. The result shows that higher perception of economic stability predicts higher marriage intensity among single men. Moreover, age is the strongest determinant of intention to marry for single men, while educational level is the strongest determinant of marriage for single women. The study informs that economic level plays a considerable role in determining marriage intention among never-married individuals in Indonesia.
