Abstract

COVID-19 is known to have an extremely high rate of spread. This spread can occur through micro-sized droplets originating from the nose or mouth when the carrier of the virus sneezes or coughs. Because of their small size, the droplets can be inhaled by people who are around the carrier of the virus. To avoid inhaling droplets, people who are around the carrier of the virus should be able to keep their distance from one another. In relation to keeping this distance, choosing an attendance recording system can also have an impact on an increase in the density of people around the attendance recording equipment. Based on the existing problems, an idea emerged to create a contactless attendance recording system based on Virtual Detection Zone (VDZ) technology. This proposed system can work with minimal equipment configurations. The system only requires a smartphone and a mobile application installed on the smartphone to record a user’s attendance. The intended Android-based mobile application is written in Java and Kotlin. Apart from mobile applications, to support the operation of the attendance recording system, a web server and database management are required in order to store the attendance information. The intended web server application is written in PHP, while MySQL is used for database management. From the analysis of the test results, the VDZ attendance recording system can be said to be functional. This conclusion is based on an evaluation of this proposed system compared to a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) based attendance system with low proximity. The results of the comparison show the superiority of the proposed VDZ-based system in several aspects. In addition, it has been proven that the radius based VDZ points can detect smartphones equipped with GPS functions, with this user’s attendance record can be stored.
