Abstract

Numeracy skills is the basic skills which human use in everyday life situation and is needed to be able to learn higher mathematics skills that will bring out a sense of awe and wonder to the Creator. The importance of numeracy skills is to be the basic skills that every human should be able to face everyday life situation. However, a significant gap related to numeracy skills was found in a group of students in grade II of a Christian school in Bogor. These students were struggling to master place value, number sense, and addition which affected to the next topic; money. Meanwhile, the other students mastered all those basic skills that caused boredom and ado during teaching and learning process. In order to overcome this gap among the students that have different phase of learning, teacher researcher implemented tiering strategies. The research method of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which in specific using Pelton’s model. The research was conducted in a Christian school in Bogor with 9 students of grade II as the research subject. This research started from July 24, 2018 to November 2, 2018. The data of this research were collected using various instruments; mentor and colleague feedback, observation checklist, and test that will be analyzed descriptively. The findings show that students’ numeracy skills is improved after the implementation of tiering strategies. The data show that all students are reached the two indicators used in this research which are; to recognize each value of Indonesian money and to count coins and bills of Indonesian money. In conclusion, tiering strategies can improve students’ numeracy skills by specificallymplementing the flexible grouping, two different activities using small group instruction for group that has specific need, and provide verbal also printed instructions clearly./Keterampilan berhitung adalah keterampilan dasar yang digunakan manusia dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dan diperlukan untuk dapat belajar keterampilan matematika yang lebih tinggi yang akan membawa kepada rasa kagum dan rasa ingin tahu akan sang pencipta. Pentingnya keterampilan berhitung adalah keterampilan dasar setiap manusia untuk mampu menghadapi situasi kehidupan sehari-hari. Namun, kesenjangan yang signifikan berkaitan dengan kemampuan berhitung ditemukan dalam sekelompok siswa kelas II di sekolah Kristen di Bogor. Siswa-siswa ini mengalami kesulitan untuk menguasai place value, number sense. dan penjumlahan yang mempengaruhi kesiapan siswa/i pada topik berikutnya; uang. Sementara itu, para siswa lainnya sudah menguasai semua keterampilan dasar berhitung yang menyebabkan kebosanan dan kekacauan selama proses belajar dan mengajar. Untuk mengatasi kesenjangan ini di antara siswa yang memiliki fase belajar yang berbeda, peneliti menerapkan strategi tiering. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang secara spesifik menggunakan model yang dikembangkan oleh Pelton. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di sekolah Kristen di Bogor dengan 9 orang siswa di kelas II sebagai subjek penelitian. Penelitian ini dimulai dari tanggal 14 Juli 2018 sampai tanggal 2 November 2018. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan menggunakan berbagai instrumen; umpan-balik mentor dan rekan sejawat, observation checklist, dan tes yang akan dianalisa secara deskriptif. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan berhitung siswa meningkat setelah pelaksanaan strategi tiering. Data menunjukkan bahwa semua siswa mencapai dua indikator yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu; mengenali setiap nilai uang Indonesia dan menghitung koin dan uang kertas Indonesia. Sebagai kesimpulan, strategi tiering dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berhitung siswa dengan menerapkan pengelompokan yang fleksibel, dua kegiatan yang berbeda menggunakan instruksi kelompok kecil untuk kelompok yang memiliki kebutuhan tertentu, dan memberikan instruksi yang jelas baik secara lisan maupun tulisan.
