Abstract

In pig farming, farmers usually add antibiotics in feed to manage diseases such as diarrhea. Additionally, antibiotics can also spur the growth of pig. However, excessive use of antibiotics can lead to pathogen resistance and antibiotics residues would remain in meat. Probiotics may be an alternative to antibiotics in animal husbandry. Probiotic is a group of lactic acid bacteria which maintains the balance of microflora in the digestive tract. This study carried out the characterization of Pediococcus pentosaceus D32 and H29 that have been isolated from local pig intestine as probiotic candidates. Characterization of probiotic properties were conducted by testing antibacterial activity against E. coli, tolerance to low pH and bile salts, coaggregation activity against E. coli, and adhesion activity against human cheek epithelial cells. Screening of resistance pattern of isolates against 23 kinds of antibiotics have also been conducted. Based on the test results, isolates D32 and H29 have antibacterial activity against E. coli, with minimum tolerance for growth in pH 2, have the ability to tolerate bile salt at concentration 0,5%, have coaggregation activity against E. coli, and have adherence ability on cheek epithelial cell. It can be concluded that both isolates have the potential to be probiotic candidates.
