Abstract

Pigs are one of the livestock in Indonesia. To improve the effectiveness of digestion, breeders add in-feed enzymes into pig feed. In-feed enzymes that used to feed pigs need to be adjusted to the type of feed which causes the limited use of exogenous enzymes. Lactic acid bacteria that able to produce extracellular enzymes related to the digestive system of pigs can be used for an alternative methods to replace the exogenous enzyme in pig feed. In this study, amylase, protease and cellulase activity testing were conducted using lactic acid bacteria that have been isolated from local pig intestines. After that, isolates that have the potential to produce all three enzymes is further characterized quantitatively with pH and temperature treatment. Of the fifteen isolates that tested, there are twelve isolates that had amylase activity, three isolates had protease activity and five isolates had cellulase activity. Isolates that potentially have activity on three of the enzymes are Pediococcus pentosaceus D32 and H29. Both of these isolates eznyme were further characterized. Characterization of enzymes with pH and temperature treatment concluded that isolates D32 and H29 have different enzyme characteristics. Isolates D32 and H29 which have amylase, protease and cellulase activities has potential as a supplement in pig’s feed.
