Abstract

Cognitive achievement becomes one important thing in learning process. Through see the result of cognitive achievement, teacher will be able to know how the students’ level in understanding the material. When students already understand the material that had been learned, they are expected to use it properly and if possible, they actively engage to help their society with knowledge they have. Unfortunately, based on the researcher’s observation in grade x at a high school in Cikarang, there were students who struggled to achieve good cognitive achievement in mathematics. The researcher decided to implement STAD method to improve students’ cognitive achievement. Then, the researcher analyze how STAD method can improve students’ cognitive achievement. In this research, the researcher uses Classroom Action Research (CAR) with Pelton’s model. The research was conducted on grade x consisting 24 students but just 6 students who chose to be the subject on this research. It was held in two actions from August 6 th - September 26th , 2018. The data was collected by using quiz, observation form, and mentor’s feedback. The data result and analysis showed that STAD method could improve students’ cognitive achievement. Even though not all students were able to pass the passing grade but the scores of all those six students in both actions improve compare to their pre-action scores. The main point of this research is improvement of students’ cognitive achievement not ability to pass the passing grade. In conclusion, the STAD method could improve students’ cognitive achievement by implementing all STAD step effectively.
