Abstract

Based on the researcher’s observation in a Grade 1 classroom at Elementary School Tangerang, it was found that students could not read texts fluently. Moreover, students took too long to finish a short passage without understanding the content of the passage itself. It occurred due to lack of training for student on methods to improve the ability to read one of them is Read-aloud. The researcher decided to conduct research to investigate this problem. The purpose of this research was to investigate how student’s English reading fluency could be improved by implementing Read-aloud. The methodology used in this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research was conducted in two cycles on August 3, 2015 – November 13, 2015 at a private Christian school in Tangerang.The subjects of this research were five grade one students. The data collected were mentor’s feedback, teacher�mentor observation sheet, students’ individual questionnaire, students’ individual test, rubrics and reflection journal. The data collected were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and qualitative descriptive methods. The research findings show that Read-aloud improve students’ English reading fluency of grade 1 students and there were several aspects (previewing the book, scaffolding on prior knowledge, emphasizing elements of the story, asking purposeful questions, summarizing and sharing thoughts) needed to be emphasized to improve student’s English reading fluency through Read-aloud. / Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan di SD XYZ Tangerang ditemukan bahwa siswa tidak dapat membaca teks dengan lancar.Lebih lagi, siswa juga sering lambat dalam menyelesaikan suatu bacaan singkat tanpa mengerti isi da ri teks tersebut. Hal ini terjadi dikarenakan kurangnya pelatihan kepada siswa mengenai metode �metode untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca salah satunya adalah membaca lantang (Read-aloud). Peneliti memutuskan untuk melakukan penilitan untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki bagaimana kemampuan membaca lancar siswa dapat ditingkatkan melalui penerapan membaca lantang (Read-aloud). Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas.Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus pada tanggal 3 Agusus 2015 – 13 November 2015 di salah satu sekolah Kristen swasta di Tangerang.Subyek penelitian adalah 5 siswa�siswikelas IC. Data yang dikumpulkan adalah umpan balik mentor, lembar pengamatan kelas, test, rubrik penilaian, dan jurna lrefleksi. Data yang diperoleh dianalis dengan menggunakan metode statistika deskriptif dan deskripsikual itatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan read-aloud dapat meningkatkan keterampilan membaca lancar siswa dan ada beberapa komponen yang harus ditekankan jika digunakan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca lancarsis dengan melakukan tahapan-taha pan dalam penerapan membaca lantang.
