Abstract

Reading interest in Indonesia is still low and in fact it is the lowest in ASEAN. This is very unfortunate because if we want to think further, there are a lot of benefits that can be obtained from reading. Reading is one of the main doors to access knowledge. Therefore, reading interest must be nurtured and developed from an early age so that it will be carried over into adulthood and becomes a life long habit, which will eventually create a reading culture in our society. This research specifically discusses how school promotes reading interest among third grade students and the researcher chose to study more deeply about this topic is because not all schools in Indonesia really pay attention to the students’ reading interest and try to promote reading interest among their students. The researcher considers XYZ School as unique and special, a rare finding regarding its efforts to promote reading interest among the students and so the objective of this research is to know the role of XYZ School in promoting reading interest among third grade students. The researcher used a qualitative – case study research. The instruments used to collect the research data were interviews to the homeroom teacher, reading specialist and librarian, observations and students’ questionnaire to class 3.1 students. Promoting and fostering reading interest in children cannot be done instantly, but through several processes and continuous practices. Teachers and librarians as part of the school clearly have important role and opportunities to promote reading interest among students by creating an enjoyable environment of reading, providing time to read, exposing them to various reading materials and implementing fun and attractive reading activities. / Minat baca di Indonesia masih rendah dan bahkan tergolong sangat rendah di ASEAN. Hal ini sangat disayangkan karena jikalau kita berpikir lebih jauh, ada banyak manfaat yang didapat dari membaca. Membaca merupakan salah satu pintu untuk mendapatkan pengetahuan. Oleh karena itu, minat baca harus ditanamkan dan dikembangkan sejak dini agar bisa terbawa hingga dewasa dan menjadi kebiasaan hidup, yang pada akhirnya dapat menciptakan masyarakat kita yang berbudaya membaca. Penelitian ini secara spesifik membahas bagaimana peran sekolah (guru�guru dan pustakawan) dalam mempromosikan minat baca kepada siswa kelas tiga SD dan peneliti memilih untuk mempelajari lebih dalam tentang topic ini karena tidak semua sekolah di Indonesia benar-benar memperhatikan minat baca para siswanya dan mencoba untuk mempromosikan minat baca kepada para siswanya. Peneliti menganggap Sekolah XYZ sebagai institusi pendidikan yang unik dan special, penemuan yang langka berkenaan dengan usaha-usaha yang dilakukan untuk mempromosikan minata baca kepada para siswanya sehingga tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana peran guru-guru dan pustakawan sebagai bagian dari Sekolah XYZ dalam mempromosikan minat baca kepada siswa kelas tiga SD. Peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif – studi kasus. Instrumen yang dipakai untuk mengumpulkan data penelitian yaitu interview kepada guru kelas, guru bidang membaca dan pustakawan, observasi dan kuesioner siswa kelas 3.1. Mempromosikan dan menumbuhkan minat baca pada anak-anak tidak bisa dilakukan secara instan atau cepat, tetapi melalui beberapa proses dan latihan yang terus-menerus. Guru-guru dan pustakawan sekolah jelas mempunyai peran penting dan kesempatan untuk mempromosikan minat baca pada para siswa dengan menciptakan situasi dan suasana membaca yang menyenangkan, menyediakan waktu untuk membaca dan berbagai jenis bahan-bahan bacaan serta melakukan aktivitas membaca yang menarik dan menyenangkan.
