Abstract

Excessive exposure to sunlight for a long time can cause the tissue in the epidermis of the skin to be unable to fight against acute or chronic negative effects. The use of sunscreen is a way to minimize the appearance of harm to the skin. Bangun- Bangun leaf extract can be used as a sunscreen because it contains phenol or flavonoids which can counteract ultraviolet (UV)-induced radicals and provide protection from UV rays. Tests were carried out by extraction using the maceration method with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and 70% ethanol as solvents. Extracts that met the standards were tested for total phenolics, total flavonoids, percentage erythema and pigmentation as well as the SPF value (Sun Protection factor). This research was conducted using instrument UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. Bangun- Bangun leaf extract has secondary metabolites, namely flavonoids and phenolics. The content of secondary metabolites supports the n-hexane extract in increasing valueSun Protection Factor. The results of the ethyl acetate extract provide ultra protection based on valueSun Protection Factor which is 37.71 and can be used as a sunblock based on the erythema transmission value of 0.015 and the pigmentation transmission value of 0.02. The highest total flavonoid content was found in the ethyl acetate extract of 1299.83 mgQE/100gr and the highest total phenolic content was found in the 70% ethanol extract of 259.89 mgQE/100gr.
