Abstract

Virtual reality-based motor training is an innovative approach that can be practiced along with physiotherapy. Physiotherapy offers limited movement variations, while therapeutic activities promote motor training as well as psychological well-being. Elderlies who experience decline in motor function have difficulty doing outdoor activities. VR technology allows users to move in a virtual environment and interact with the elements within it. This research aims to design a therapeutic virtual environment where elderly can train their motor function by engaging in therapeutic activities. The interaction between the user and virtual objects must be optimized in order to effectively train the motor function. The therapeutic environment is designed to accommodate therapeutic activities that can train range of motion, promote recovery, and promote personal growth. This includes using natural materials, natural colors, and greenery. Questionnaire survey is conducted to understand elderly’s preferences of activities and environments. The design of this therapeutic virtual environment is tested on the elderly. In the therapeutic virtual environment, the elderly can experience arranging plants to achieve the desired aesthetics (nature activity), planning a picnic in the tea garden (social activity), gardening (physical activity), and arranging flowers (creative activity). Elderlies can interact with virtual objects while doing these therapeutic activities. The activities involved movements such as reaching, lifting, and bending which move various joints of the body. The results of this design apply the continuous movement locomotion technique so that it can accommodate the elderly to do therapeutic activities and enjoy the virtual environment easily. The elderly feel that being active in a virtual environment can train motor functions. This research shows that the use of VR is safe and possible to provide a therapeutic beneficial experience. Variety of scenarios and therapeutic activities can be accommodated in this virtual environment.
