Abstract

Mind-body-environment connection has a significant role in reducing stress for the elderly. The surrounding environment has an influence on the physical and psychological health of the elderly. The healing architecture approach provides positive spaces that rejuvenate the elderly using nature and enables the promotion of healing experiences. A physical environment around the elderly has limitations in providing a proper environment for psychological recovery. Virtual Reality enables architects to create comprehensive environments in various forms; as well as enabling the integration of healing activities with architectural environments. So that multi-psychological architectural environment can be explored and perceived through the elderly senses. This research aims to create a virtual healing space for the elderly to achieve a mind-body-environment connection. The design strategy includes the integration between Chinese healing practice Qigong with natural landscapes. The Qigong virtual environment combines breathing and movement within the simulated audio, light, material and seasons. The preliminary questionnaires aim to collect data on the elders’ preferences and feedbacks for the ideal healing space. The virtual healing space consists of three designed virtual environments which merge Chinese garden concepts and natural characteristics. Each design integrates the seasons as a natural character that relates to the elderly’s psychology, Qigong activity and meditation. Springtime rejuvenates the elders with floral element, while autumntime connect the elders with the fog element, and summertime takes the elders to feel water element. The design of mind- body-environment connection needs to pay attention to the sequence experienced by the elders towards the psychological impressions of various seasons. Virtual authentic Qigong environmental combined with healing architecture approach performed well to lower the blood pressure of the elders, as a sign of stress reduction. Virtual healing space has the capability to revolutionize health and stress coping mechanisms for elderly people.
