Abstract

Bunaken Island, located in North Sulawesi, is a region known for its beauty of underwater nature which made it a popular tourist destination among local and foreign tourists. Until now, the resort industry on Bunaken Island continues to grow to meet the visitors’ needs on an adventure to find authenticity in these so-called backwater regions. Queen’s Villa Bunaken is a private resort owned by a family with Chinese background who invested in building the resort in 2013. Up to this point, Queen’s Villa Bunaken was developed to balance the business competition in the resort industry on Bunaken Island which continues to strengthen. Thus, one of the strategies for reaching more visitors is to strengthen the identity of Queen’s Villa Bunaken itself by focusing on the experiences felt by visitors to satisfy the appetites of consumerism. Narrative approach is used in the design of Queen’s Villa Bunaken to introduce local culture and the owner’s identity to the visitors through narrative and multisensory experiences as an appreciation to cultural heritage and appreciation of nature and culture to accommodate the interests of visitors who come to “touch” exotic cultures. The narration that was arranged invites visitors to go on an adventure during their visit at Bunaken Island by adopting local folklore. With the construction of an atmosphere that resembles a traditional local village in the design, visitors can interact directly with the space in a multisensory manner so that they can learn about the local culture starting form art, people’s daily activities, socialization manner, to food preparation. The implementation of this narrative approach is also in line with the philosophy that is closely related to the life of the people of North Sulawesi (Minahasan). Sitou Timou Tumou Tou, which means Humans Live to Humanize Others. The design of Queen’s Villa Bunaken with a narrative approach is expected to “humanize” tourists through educational experiences in a spatial scope.
