Abstract

Food waste and food loss are a global issue that poses a significant impact on the environment, especially in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Indonesia and South Korea have implemented different approaches in managing food waste. This paper aims to compare and analyze the food waste laws in Indonesia and South Korea, particularly in terms of their effectiveness in reducing food waste and mitigating its environmental impact. Indonesia has enacted Law No. 18 of 2008 on Waste Management, which emphasizes waste reduction at the source, sorting and separating waste, and recycling. However, the law lacks specific regulations for food waste management. Meanwhile, South Korea implemented the Volume Based Waste Fee System (VBWF) in 1995, which requires all households and businesses to sort and recycle food waste. The law imposes fines on non-compliant individuals and companies, while also providing an integrated system for recycling. South Korea's policy has resulted in a significant decrease in food waste and greenhouse gas emissions, which are typically produced by food waste in landfills. On the other hand, Indonesia's lack of specific regulations and poor implementation has resulted in the continuous increase of food waste in landfills, contributing to the country's growing carbon footprints. It is crucial for Indonesia to strengthen its food waste management policies to minimize its environmental impact and improve sustainability. In conclusion, this paper highlights the significant differences between Indonesia and South Korea in their food waste management policies. South Korea's policies have been more effective in reducing food waste and mitigating its impact on the environment, while Indonesia needs to strengthen its policies to address this issue. Food waste is a critical issue that needs urgent attention from all stakeholders to reduce its impact on the environment and ensure sustainable development.
