Abstract
Cognitive achievement is one of the goals in education. It can help the teachers to measure students’ cognitive level in grasping the material and at the end, they are expected to apply the knowledge in taking care of the earth. However, there were still students who struggled in achieving better cognitive achievement in mathematics. They could not understand and apply the concepts so that their cognitive achievement was low. The researcher decided to implement STAD method to improve students’ cognitive achievement and analyze how STAD could improve their cognitive achievement. Classroom Action Research (CAR) with Kemmis and McTaggart model is used for the research method. The research was conducted on Grade VII consisting 18 students at a Christian school in Bogor. It was conducted in two cycles from September 27th – October 8th, 2015. The data was collected by using a quiz, observation forms, questionnaires, documentation and journal reflection. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and also data reductiondisplay-conclusion drawing method. The quiz was assessed by using MYP mathematics assessment criterion A. The data result and analysis showed that the STAD method could improve students’ cognitive achievement. 67% of the students could pass the quiz in the pre-cycle, 76% of the students could pass the quiz in the first cycle and 89% of the students could pass the quiz in the second cycle. In conclusion, the STAD method could improve students’ cognitive achievement by implementing all of STAD method steps effectively. All elements of cooperative learning must happen in each STAD group./ Pencapaian kognitif adalah salah satu dari tujuan pendidikan.
