Abstract

The background of this study is the importance of students‟ engagement in the learning process, including in learning mathematics. It becomes a problem as the students disengaged in learning about probability which is considered as complex materials. This research aims to discover the effect of brainstorming implementation on students‟ engagement in learning about probability in math classes grade XI IPA at SMA ABC Cikarang. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental with non�equivalent control group design. It was conducted at SMA ABC Cikarang on September 28th to October 6 th , 2015. This research was population research in which all students of grade XI IPA were treated as the population and the samples. The instrument in this research was questionnaire. The data analysis techniques were non-parametric tests; they were Mann-Whitney U-test and Wilcoxon Signed�Rank test with alpha level 0.05. The result showed that: 1) there was no significant difference on students‟ engagement between before and after treatment in the group that was taught without brainstorming (Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test‟s result: ); 2) there was significant difference on students‟ engagement between before and after treatment in the group that is taught with brainstorming (Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test‟s result: ); and 3) there was no significant difference on students‟ engagement between the group that is taught with brainstorming and the group that is taught without brainstorming (Mann-Whitney U-test‟s result: ). The third finding could happen because before the treatments, both groups were considered as equal but with a small probability value, as the result of Mann-Whitney U-test. The result of this research indicates that brainstorming implementation gives a positive effect on students‟ engagement in learning about probability in math classes grade XI IPA at SMA ABC Cikarang./ Latar belakang dari penelitian ini adalah pentingnya keterlibatan siswa dalam proses pembelajaran, termasuk dalam mempelajari matematika. Hal ini menjadi masalah saat siswa tidak terlibat saat belajar tentang peluang yang dianggap sebagai materi yang kompleks. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan pengaruh penerapan brainstorming terhadap keterlibatan siswa dalam mempelajari topik peluang di pelajaran matematika kelas XI IPA SMA ABC Cikarang. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah quasi-eksperimen dengan desain non-equivalent control group. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMA ABC Cikarang pada 28 September hingga 6 Oktober 2015. Ini merupakan penelitian populasi dimana semua siswa kelas XI IPA diperlakukan sebagai populasi dan sampel. Instrumen dalam penelitian ini adalah kuesioner. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah uji non-parametrik, yaitu uji Mann�Whitney U dan uji Wilcoxon Signed-Rank dengan taraf signifikansi 0.05. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: 1) tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam keterlibatan siswa antara sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan di grup yang diajar tanpa brainstorming (hasil uji Wilcoxon Signed-Rank: ); 2) ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada keterlibatan siswa antara sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan di grup yang diajar dengan brainstorming (hasil uji Wilcoxon Signed-Rank: ); dan 3) tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada keterlibatan siswa antara grup yang diajar dengan brainstorming dan tanpa brainstorming (hasil uji Mann-Whitney U: ). Hasil ketiga dapat terjadi dikarenakan sebelum perlakuan, kedua grup dianggap berada dalam kondisi yang sama namun dengan nilai peluang yang kecil, sebagai hasil uji Mann-Whitney U. Hasil dari penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa penerapan brainstorming memberikan pengaruh yang positif terhadap keterlibatan siswa dalam mempelajari peluang di pelajaran matematika kelas XI IPA SMA ABC Cikarang.
