Abstract

In the past few decades, the disparity between the rich and the poor in Indonesia has expanded rapidly and has never been wider. The saturation of wealth inequality in Indonesia is often recognized between two major regions, the western region (Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan) and the Eastern region (Sulawesi, Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua), where the West is relatively more developed than the East, particularly in the island of Java. Marxist believe that wealth inequality driven by capitalism becomes the key source of poverty in Indonesia and that making the use of labors and resources hindered development of least developed countries to growth. However, in reality, the application of pure Marxist theory becomes irrelevant and the case of Indonesia’s poverty cannot be purely explained by capitalism approach. As such, this research focuses on identifying the layers on how Marxists is challenged in explaining the contribution to poverty in Indonesia. The research will take a look at Marxist and Economic Structuralism theories highlighting the concepts of class struggle, wealth inequality and poverty to determine the cause of poverty in Indonesia is largely and describing the government’s policies on poverty eradication.
