Abstract

In education and social life, writing skills are needed because students need to be able to express thoughts, opinions, and develop thinking ability. Reading interest is one of the internal factors of writing ability. As many as 71.4% of students in XI Science class XYZ School did not have awareness of reading and students were not used to writing. This study aims to analyze differences in reading interest and writing skills in explanatory texts between before and after applying think pair share method in the experimental class and the lecture method in the control class in Biology class XI from October 2022 - May 2023 with 19 students in each class as research subjects. The design of the experimental method used is Weak Experimental in the form of static-group pretest-posttest. The research instruments used were rubrics and essay tests that had been tested for validity and reliability. The non-parametric statistical test used to analyze differences between before and after treatment in the same class is the Wilcoxon with a significance level of 0.05. The statistical test used to analyze the differences in the initial abilities of the two classes is the Mann-Whitney two tailed with a significance level of 0.05. From the test results it can be concluded that there are differences in reading interest and skills in writing explanatory texts between before and after applying think pair share in the experimental class and the lecture method in the control class in Biology class XI. The think pair share method and the lecture method are effective in increasing interest in reading and writing skills of explanatory text in class XI Biology lesson. / Dalam pendidikan maupun kehidupan bermasyarakat, keterampilan menulis sangat dibutuhkan karena siswa perlu untuk mampu mengungkapkan pemikiran, pendapat, dan mengembangkan daya pikir. Minat baca adalah salah satu faktor internal dari kemampuan menulis. Sebanyak 71,4% siswa kelas XI IPA Sekolah XYZ belum memiliki kesadaran membaca dan siswa belum terbiasa menulis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan minat baca dan keterampilan menulis teks eksplanasi antara sebelum dan sesudah menerapkan think pair share pada kelas eksperimen dan metode ceramah pada kelas kontrol pelajaran Biologi kelas XI dari bulan Oktober 2022 – Mei 2023 dengan subjek penelitian 19 siswa pada tiap kelas. Rancangan metode eksperimen yang digunakan adalah Weak Experimental berupa static-group pretest-postest. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah rubrik dan tes uraian bebas yang telah diuji validitas dan reliabilitasnya. Uji statistik non-parametrik yang digunakan untuk menganalisis perbedaan antara sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan pada satu kelas yang sama adalah Wilcoxon dengan taraf signifikansi 0,05. Uji statistik yang digunakan untuk menganalisis perbedaan kemampuan awal kedua kelas adalah Mann-Whitney two tailed dengan taraf signifikansi 0,05. Dari hasil pengujian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan minat baca dan keterampilan menulis teks eksplanasi antara sebelum dan sesudah penerapan metode think pair share pada kelas eksperimen dan penerapan metode ceramah pada kelas kontrol pelajaran Biologi kelas XI. Metode think pair share dan metode ceramah efektif meningkatkan minat baca dan keterampilan menulis teks eksplanasi dalam pelajaran Biologi kelas XI.
