Abstract

Reducing liquefaction potential of sand can be done by increasing the cohesion values and reducing the saturation. These can be fulfilled by utilizing bacteria Bacillus subtilis. The bacteria can produce biocement which can bind the particles of sand. Through the biocementation process, the sand became denser and the cohesion values of sand increased. Furthermore, the respiration in bacteria produce gas, which could reduce the saturation of sand. After 90 days of curing periodes, direct shear test indicated the cohesion values of treated sand increased by 149,93% compared to the untreated sand. The increase in density of sand was proved visually through the images, produced by Scanning Electrone Microscope (SEM), of treated and untreated sand. Constant head permeability test showed that the permeability coefficient of treated sand decreased by 53,71% compared to untreated sand, which proved the sand became denser. Furthermore, the mineral contained in sand was tested by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and there was dolomite mineral, which contained calcium and carbonate, in treated sand. Shake table simulation showed the sand treated with Bacillus subtilis had less settlement compared to untreated sand.
