Abstract

There are several skills that students must have in English language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each student must participate actively in using these skills. One of the skills is speaking skills. The researcher found that secondary students in one of the Christian private schools in Tangerang did not participate actively in using speaking skills. They could not speak full English and would not understand the teacher who used only English while teaching. So, this ability must be maximized. Therefore, this study has goals to improve secondary students’ speaking skills with one of the collaborative learning strategies, which is group work. The method used was a qualitative descriptive method. It was found that secondary students faced some problems in their speaking skills such as linguistic factors (lack of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation) and nonlinguistic factors (lack of self-confidence and motivation). The utilization of group work helped them to improve several indicators of speaking skills such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation as proved by their learning outcomes and learning experiences in class. For future research, it is suggested to focus on the Christian teacher’s role in emphasizing the urgency of mastering English-speaking skills to the students from a Christian perspective.
