Abstract

Pelindungan hukum atas indikasi geografis sangat penting dilakukan. Indikasi geografis merupakan suatu tanda yang menunjukkan daerah asal suatu barang, yang karena faktor lingkungan geografis termasuk faktor alam, faktor manusia, atau kombinasi dari kedua faktor tersebut, memberikan ciri dan kualitas tertentu pada barang yang dihasilkan. Ciri dan kualitas barang yang dipelihara dan dapat dipertahankan dalam jangka waktu tertentu akan melahirkan reputasi atas barang tersebut, yang selanjutnya memungkinkan barang tersebut memiliki nilai ekonomi tinggi. Meskipun memiliki potensi ekonomi, sayangnya bentuk kesadaran masyarakat akan pentingnya pendaftaran indikasi geografis masih kurang. Perlu adanya kesadaran hukum bagi masyarakat dan juga peran dari pemerintah daerah untuk mendata produk-produk daerah mereka sebagai bagian bentuk pelindungan hak ekonomi atas indikasi geografis. / The protection of geographical indication is urgency to be legally protected. Geographical indication is a sign of product that indicates the originality, due to geographical environment including factors of nature, human or combination of both which containing particular characters and qualities within a product. Those characters and quality are maintained and sustained in certain length of time which will contribute reputation (well known) over the product and may raising its economic value. Although it has a higher enocomic potential but the public awareness about the importance of geographical indication’s registration is still lacking. Its require the legal awareness for the community and also the role of local authorities to assess local products as part of their economic rights on geographical indications.
