Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country with abundant cultural diversity, one of the examples of this culture was batik which has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage. Realizing Indonesia's lack of presence in the United States, Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Dino Patti Djalal used batik as an instrument of public diplomacy. Therefore, this research aims to find out the reasons for choosing batik as an instrument of Indonesian public diplomacy as well as the response of the United States public regarding Indonesian public diplomacy. In this research, Constructivism Theory is used in harmony with the concepts of Public Diplomacy and Soft Power using a qualitative approach and historical research methods. Research data was obtained through physical and online literature searches. Indonesia constructs Indonesia's image through the use of Batik as an instrument of Public Diplomacy towards the people of the United States. The use of soft power is clearly visible in the leadership of the Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Dino Patti Djalal, who held batik design competitions and batik exhibitions. Indonesia's public diplomacy with batik instruments has succeeded in increasing Indonesia's visibility in the United States by showing philosophies such as the values of perseverance, refinement, creativity and the spirituality of Indonesia. The response of the United States public regarding Indonesian public diplomacy tends to be positive, as can be seen from the enthusiasm of applicants for the batik design competition, which has increased every year since 2011.
