Abstract

One form of language use is discourse which can be in the form of writing such as music and song lyrics. Song lyrics are the right choice to express feelings. On August 16, 2023, a well-known K-pop artist, Kim Namjoon, posted in an Instagram story, which was then discussed in more depth on Twitter, the song “Bad Religion” composed by Frank Ocean, 11 years ago. He was not involved in writing or creating this song but was being canceled by his fans because it was considered blasphemy. This research uses a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis methods. Data was collected by indirect observation, with secondary data from literature studies and through Twitter. The researcher interprets this song lyrics with many colloquial languages or everyday terms in American society using Semiotics proposed by Ferdinand De Saussure, namely Sign, Signifier, and Signified. Regarding this case, researchers also update through existing news. The research results show that the song created by Frank Ocean does not touch on religious blasphemy, just to vent his heart out, and Cancel culture occurs because fans see texts only through religious perspective.
