Abstract

People who are oppressed by their governments, like those in Thailand and Myanmar, view democracy as the ideal goal. Those people who are oppressed by their government rallied on the streets and use means to voice their disapproval of the actions from the dictatorial government. They adopted symbolic message to avoid government sanctions when voicing out their concerns. Demonstrators used symbolic messages to elude official sanctions as a result of the government's harsh actions. The significance of this research lies in its examination of the relationship between foreign popular culture and domestic politics. An example of this is the application of global pop culture phenomena in local contexts. One way to do this is by bringing global pop culture trends into local contexts. For instance, the pro-democracy activists in Thailand and Myanmar adopted the "Three-finger Salute" from the movie "The Hunger Games" when they are protesting against the government. The goal of this research is to determine the factors that led to the selection of this symbol and the influence it has had on the pro-democracy movement. Several secondary sources were used to answer the research question reviewing existing and related literature and using the Event-Structure Analysis method. After done collecting the information, the narative will then be analysed using constructivism theory, democracy, popular culture and social construct concept, leading to the result that the “Three-Finger Salute” has successfully foster a sense of unity amongst pro-democracy movements across national boundaries.
