Abstract

Background: Impulsivity is a behavior that is spontaneous and has the impression of without being thought of carefully. This behavior is often associated with psychiatric illness, but research regarding the correlation between anxiety and depression is still lacking . On the other hand, anxiety is a psychiatric disorder which can be defined as an excessive feelings of fear and anxiety, and depression is a condition of psychiatric disorders which can be defined as feelings of intense pressure and decreased desire to do things they normally do. With an increase in mental illness problems in Indonesians aged 15 years and over by 2% and it is estimated that the COVID-19 pandemic will exacerbate this issue, as well as the difference in results from previous studies, it is necessary to explore the correlation of impulsivity with anxiety and depression. Research objective: The purpose of this study is to see whether there is a correlation between the tendency of impulsivity and the occurrence of anxiety and depression among UPH Faculty of Medicine students. Hypothesis: There is positive correlation between impulsivity tendencies with anxiety and depression. Research method: This research is a correlation study using primary data in the form of a questionnaire consisting of BIS-11 and also DASS-21. The data will be taken from UPH Medical Faculty Medical students (18-25). The confounding factors of the data used are stress and gender which will be studied further to see the effect of these factors on the correlation results. The data will then be analyzed with the Pearson test or Spearman test using the SPSS version 29.0 application. Results: From a total of 83 active FK UPH students, there were 55 female students and 28 students. The average depressive score was 10.24 (mild depression), the average anxiety score was 9.11 (mild anxiety), and the average stress score was 10.5 (normal stress score), as well as a standard deviation of 7,742 for depression, 6.620. for anxiety and 7,277 for stress. The average impulsivity score was 65.69 with a standard deviation of 6,820. The results of the Spearman test show that there is a significant positive correlation between impulsivity and anxiety (R = 0.453, p = <0.001) and depression (R = 0.569, p = <0.001), but for second-order impulsivity the results are as follows: Attentional Impulsivity has a correlation positive on anxiety (R = 0.638, P = <0.001) and depression (R = 0.585, P = <0.001), Motoric Impulsivity has a positive correlation with anxiety (R = 0.301, P = <0.001) but there is no relationship with depression ( R=0.192, P= 0.082), Non- Planning Impulsivity has a positive correlation with depression (R=0.330, P=0.002) but there is no relationship with anxiety (R=0.073, P=0.511). Multivariate results show that Attentional Impulsivity is the main predictor for depression (B=1.021, P=<0.001) and anxiety (B=0.558, P=<0.001). Conclusion: There is a positive correlation between Impulsivity and Anxiety and Depression, and Attentional Impulsivity is the main predictor when compared with other factors.
