Abstract

Efficient and standardized manufacturing processes play an important role in ensuring the quality of the output meets the established standards. However, the high complexity and variety of products in manufacturing impose challenges in maintaining quality and minimizing errors. Studies uncover that the average defect rate in manufacturing processes in Indonesia is 31%–a far cry from the ideal defect rate or towards zero defects. Findings show that human error in the manual production process at Spectrum Unitec Inc. significantly contributes to the occurrence of defects. Although the largest percentage of defects is merely 0.2% of total production, the financial loss incurred is considerable. This study aims to investigate the relationship between fatigue, unsafe acts, and human error, and the potential impact of shift moderation on the relationship. Data collection was conducted through distributing questionnaires to operators working on shift 1 and shift 2. The results of data processing using the SmartPLS application show that fatigue and unsafe acts have a statistically significant and positive effect on human error. This is indicated by the obtaining of p-value <0.05 in both relationships which have been modeled on the construct. Other than that, unsafe acts are also proven statistically to be partially mediating the relationship between fatigue and human error, one of which can also be identified based on the acquisition of p-value <0.05.
