Abstract

Face-to-face dating is an activity carried out by the community before the new media era has replaced the definition of interpersonal communication. However, face-to-face dating slowly began to be abandoned because of the internet that provides facilities such as chat rooms on social media. Online dating is one of the popular ways to meet potential partners. Technology has changed the first meeting more instantaneously and efficient to get acquainted with the need for no face-to-face meetings. This research uses a qualitative approach with explorative research methods. Research data collected through in-depth interviews and literature study. Interviews were conducted with three participants of the Setipe.com users who successfully brought their relationship to the marriage stage. The results of the study show the internet provides confidentiality which makes a person feel that only them and their interlocutors know about their activities on the internet. Online dating applications are used by people who have limited time, chose transparency to self-disclose, and to find the love of their life. Familiarity tends to remind someone to their past memory. Emotional distress and social isolation can affect someone to decide their serious relationship with their partner. Kencan secara tatap muka merupakan aktivitas yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat sebelum era media baru menggeser definisi dari komunikasi antarpribadi. Namun, kencan secara tatap muka perlahan mulai ditinggalkan sebab adanya internet yang memberikan fasilitas seperti chatroom pada media sosial. Online dating menjadi salah satu cara populer untuk bertemu pasangan yang potensial. Teknologi telah mengubah pertemuan pertama lebih instan dan mengefisiensi waktu untuk berkenalan dengan tidak perlunya tatap muka. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode penelitian eksploratif. Pengumpulan data penelitian dilakukan dengan wawancara mendalam dan studi kepustakaan. Wawancara dilakukan kepada tiga partisipan pengguna aplikasi Setipe.com yang berhasil membawa hubungan mereka pada tahap pernikahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa internet memberikan konfidensialitas yang membuat seseorang merasa bahwa hanya dirinya dan lawan bicaranya yang mengetahui aktivitas mereka di internet. Aplikasi kencan online dimanfaatkan oleh orang-orang yang memiliki keterbatasan waktu, menyukai transparansi, dan mencari pasangan hidup. Unsur familiarity cenderung mengingatkan seseorang pada memori masa lalu. Seseorang yang mengalami tekanan emosional dan isolasi sosial merupakan faktor penting untuk memutuskan membangun hubungan yang serius dengan calon pasangan.
