Abstract

Fast fashion, inexpensive and widely available of-the-moment garments, has changed the way people buy and dispose of clothing. By selling large quantities of clothing at cheap prices. Further, increased consumption patterns have also created millions of tons of textile waste in landfills and unregulated settings. This is particularly true in low and middle-income countries, as most of this waste ends up in the secondhand clothing market. From water-intensive cotton cultivation to the release of untreated dyes into local water sources, the environmental impacts of textile production are significant. In addition, several studies show that an increasing number of consumers are willing to pay higher prices for environmentally friendly clothing, some textile manufacturers exploit this by marketing their products through false advertising, a practice known as greenwashing. Therefore, in this paper, the author will discuss how to mitigate potential greenwashing in efforts to develop a sustainable fashion where many sustainable claims can be found in the fashion industry, as well as the role of stakeholders regarding their responsibility for waste management. As well textile as waste management it requires independent certifications for fashion products, as well as some monitoring mechanisms from the regulators. The author adopts a comparative research approach by comparing the regulatory frameworks in Indonesia with those in the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, which is expected to help fashion companies achieve more circular, sustainable, and resilient value chains.
