Abstract

This research investigates the impact of bankruptcy risk and opinion shopping practices on issuing going concern audit opinions. Additionally, it delves into the role of corporate governance mechanism in moderating the associations between bankruptcy risk, opinion shopping practices, and the issuance of going concern audit opinions. This study employs logistic regression analysis to utilize observational data from a sample of 400 firm-years operating in the property, real estate, and building construction sectors across five ASEAN countries. The results of this study indicate that both bankruptcy risk and the practice of opinion shopping positively influence the likelihood of receiving going concern audit opinions. Furthermore, this research reveals that corporate governance mechanism plays a mitigating role in the connection between opinion shopping practices and issuing going concern audit opinions. However, it is worth noting that corporate governance mechanism does not moderate the relationship between bankruptcy risk and the likelihood of receiving going concern audit opinions. Valuable to investors, auditors, and regulators, it deepens the understanding of factors influencing going concern audit opinions and contributes to refining oversight processes. Additionally, this research opens avenues for further exploration of the complex interplay between financial risks, management practices, corporate governance, and audit outcomes.
