Abstract

Seeing the environmental damage occurring worldwide, public awareness to the environment is also increasing. Community participation in environmental conservation can start with small things, such as using eco-friendly products. However, it doesn't mean there are no challenges or obstacles in doing this action. In reality, there are businesses that market products with environmentally friendly claims, even though the products may not be environmentally friendly or have a positive impact on the environment. This practice is known as greenwashing. The existence of greenwashing is detrimental to consumers who have spent extra money to buy environmentally friendly products. Moreover, greenwashing also makes consumers skeptical when purchasing environmentally friendly products, even though the products might truly be environmentally friendly. This research aims to develop legal knowledge in consumer protection against greenwashing by using Ecolabel in Indonesia. This research uses normative empirical approach, non-judicial case study as its method. The role of Ecolabel as indicators of environmentally friendly products is crucial in this situation, since the Ecolabel logo cannot be used arbitrarily and must adhere to international standards, ISO. Ecolabel must be certified and verified by an independent body that already registered to the government. Also, there will be surveillance on the independent body and on the products that uses Ecolabel logo. Ecolabel also helps producers to be responsible for the environmental claims on their products, therefore can fulfil consumers rights in terms of having the correct information regarding the products.
