Abstract

This study explores the relationship between lung function and skeletal muscle mass, focusing on the impact of smoking. Given the crucial role of skeletal muscle in daily bodily functions and its susceptibility to various external and internal factors, this study aims to understand how lung function—measured through spirometry—relates to skeletal muscle mass. Sarcopenia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the main focus as both conditions exhibit declines in lung function and muscle mass. Utilizing medical students as the sample, this research seeks to identify the influence of lifestyle on lung and muscle health, providing new insights into the prevention and management of age- and lifestyle-related conditions. Research Objective: To determine the relationship between FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC values with the skeletal muscle mass of students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan in 2020. Research Method: This study employed a cross-sectional study design. Sampling was conducted on active students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan, aged 17-22 years, using purposive sampling method. Results: From a total of 126 samples collected, a significant relationship was found between the FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC values and the skeletal muscle mass of students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan in 2020, with Spearman's correlation indicating a moderate to strong relationship between lung function and skeletal muscle mass index, with very high statistical significance (p-value < 0.001). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC values and skeletal muscle mass among students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan in 2020. Keywords: FVC, FEV1, skeletal muscle mass, spirometry
