Abstract

A form of an art that is created through a performance by one or an ensemble of performers, shown in front of an audience is called the performing arts. Despite having its own appeal, performing in front of many people can lead to “performance anxiety”. Performance anxiety is the experience of persisting stress that may or may not cause impairment in one’s performance skill in a wide range of activities done in unfamiliar public situations, including a musical performance. This is especially very concerning for singers and voice students. Unaddressed performance anxiety in voice students can lead to diminished quality in their performance and impaired the control of their vocal technique, with the most affected one being their breath control, which is considered as one of the most crucial techniques in singing. Through observation and survey done in vocal major students in the Universitas Pelita Harapan Conservatory of Music, this has been a phenomenon that’s been experienced by students and noticed by the voice lecturers. In previous studies, the use of VR simulations has been found effective in helping treat and decrease the symptoms and occurrence of social anxiety, which includes performance anxiety. However, a very limited amount of research has been done on music related performance anxiety, and even less specifically on singing performances. Through mixed-method design, this study aims to learn the effects of VR simulation implementation on voice major students of Universitas Pelita Harapan Conservatory of Music’s performance anxiety level and breath control. / Performing arts merupakan salah satu bentuk seni yang diciptakan melalui penampilan oleh satu atau lebih penampil di depan penonton. Menampilkan sebuah pertunjukan di depan banyak orang seringkali dapat menimbulkan yang disebut dengan “performance anxiety”. Performance anxiety adalah kejadian munculnya stres secara terus-menerus yang bisa saja menyebabkan penuruan dalam penampilan seorang penampil dalam berbagai bentuk aktivitas pertunjukan di tempat umum, termasuk dalam sebuah penampian bermusik. Hal ini dapat sangat merugikan bagi penyanyi dan mahasiswa-mahasiswi vokal. Performance anxiety yang tidak diatasi dapat menyebabkan adanya penurunan kualitas dalam penampilan bernyanyi, serta mengganggu teknik bernyanyi, salahnya satunya adalah teknik kontrol pernafasan yang merupakan salah satu teknik paling dasar dan penting bagi penyanyi. Melalui observasi dan survei yang telah dilakukan terhadap mahasiswa-mahasiswi serta dosen vokal di Universitas Pelita Harapan Conservatory of Music, hal ini pun telah menjadi fenomena yang dialami oleh mahasiswa dan disadari oleh pengajar vokal. Pada penelitian terdahulu, penggunaan simulasi VR telah ditemukan efektif dalam membantu mengatasi dan mengurangi gejala serta kemunculan dari social anxiety, termasuk juga pada performance anxiety. Akan tetapi, belum terlalu banyak penelitian telah dilakukan terhadap performance anxiety dalam bermusik, dan lebih sedikit lagi terhadap penyanyi-penyanyi. Melalui desain penelitian kombinasi (kuantitatif dan kualitatif), penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh dari penggunaan simulasi VR terhadap music performance anxiety dan kontrol pernafasan mahasiswa-mahasiswi vokal Conservatory of Music U Universitas Pelita Harapan.
