Abstract

The ongoing rise of globalization undoubtedly impacts human life, but we often do not realize the destructive impacts that follows it. Our earth is at stake with mass global coral bleaching being a rising concern due to the rise in sea water temperature, a product of climate change. Anthropogenic factors act as a major contributor to environmental degradation, with our social, economic, and political development destroying natural habitats. The state motivation to pursue their national interest often inhibits the ability of the international community to achieve environmental sustainability, polluting seas and oceans and thus putting marine life at risk. It is up to us to turn things around and make use of the interconnectedness provided to us by globalization. Despite its dangerous impacts, globalization can also act as a platform for climate action, connecting ideas and plans to contribute to a better society. We have seen efforts through the rise of international environmental regimes, who fight for to stop ecological destruction. Despite this, the motivation to save the planet is at a wrong viewpoint. Anthropocentrism and instincts of survival are at the heart of most states’ agenda, and if we continue to do things for humans’ selfish reasons, we will not be able to progress towards a cleaner, greener future. Through the use of Green Political Theory, this thesis analyses both the good and bad impacts of globalization, and how it might not be too late for us to turn things around.
