Abstract

The majority of the millions of blind people who live in Indonesia depend on other people to help them with their daily tasks, demonstrating how crucial vision is to blind people's ability to live safely and independently. Since vision is the main sense that is used to perceive the world, blind people's reduced vision stimulates their other four senses, particularly touch, to become more perceptive. The accompanying solution in helping the blind pick up items for activities so far has been to mark the product with legible writing only for people who can see and an inclusive customizable ready-to-use braille label system is not yet accessible in Indonesia due to its high cost of importation. Therefore, we require an inexpensive identifying gadget that the blind may use on their own without assistance. The design of this product was carried out from observations and interviews with blind people who live in the community, followed by market research on existing products in Indonesia, and then data analysis using the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method to make it easier to understand problems, identify needs, and make decisions in designing identification product with ability-based design theory. Therefore, a product was designed using the ability-based design theory which focuses on the ability and adaptation of product design to the user's special situation in helping the blind identify items so they can carry out daily activities independently using the reglet and stylus operational system.
