Abstract

Ceramic stools are furniture that ancient Chinese people have long used in their daily lives and we still use it today. The use of ceramic material has its advantages: toughness, weather resistance, and attractive finishing. Ceramics are heavily correlated to Chinese culture which is carried over to Indonesian culture through Peranakan Chinese culture, namely Nyonya ware. However, the Peranakan culture itself is starting to fade so there needs to be an effort to remind and re-populise the culture of our ancestors. Product development is carried out with the aim of preserving Peranakan Chinese culture using ceramic stools with modernized Peranakan culture so that culture can be reintroduced in a modern way to be more easily accepted by modern society. With that goal, sketches and designs were selected and assessed using the QFD table. Then the sketches were made into models and several colour and shape tests were conducted. Then a 1:1 scale stool was made based on the designed model using coiling and slab techniques. After the shaping process, the stool was fired at a high temperature and a layer of glaze was applied. The results of the design were then tested on 5 users to be reviewed and assessed based on the criteria of aesthetic appeal, symbolic meaning, design innovation, comfort, and design relevance to modern themes.
