Abstract

The phenomenon of globalization has had significant impacts on global society across social, economic, political, and cultural strata. Its effects on the built environment have yielded results that point towards technological advancements and the increasing integration of the global community through communication networks. As one of its consequences, urbanization and the dissemination of information regarding a dominant culture have raised the need for heightened attention to issues of urban identity. This study aims to cultural quarters as forms of symbolic economy and their potential as catalysts for urban development by tracing their characteristics and developmental activities. This endeavor is undertaken to devise a design module for cultural quarters formed by three pillars: live, work, and visit. The designated area is surrounded by residential zones and serves as a transit hub for commuter rail users, thus imbuing the area with the characteristics of a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). The research aims to design an environment conducive to economically and socially active TOD through the application of mixed-use concepts. Research methods employed include literature review, precedent analysis, and configuration exploration. The findings serve as the basis for identifying the characteristics and elements of a cultural quarter, which are then abstracted for implementation on-site as the foundation for spatial design strategies. This design yields a mapping of active activity programs that synergize among space users achieved through the provision of convex spaces as one strategy for managing public spaces. Secondly, the design results in spatial configurations that facilitate economic and social activities of space users through typologies of spaces that embed the concept of mixed-use. Lastly, the design emphasizes the catalytic nature of activities occurring for twenty-four hours in the area, expected to create a strong sense of place identity and foster an active environment in both social and economic layers of the area.
