Abstract

Ilustrasi yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan pesan dari konten tertulis secara visual deketahui sebagai ilustrasi editorial. Salah satu majalah ternama di Indonesia, Tempo, memanfaatkan ilustrasi editorial agar beberapa artikel memiliki makna yang lebih dalam. Masalah utama adalah adanya ketidakkonsistenan dalam gaya visual Tempo antar terbitan majalah dan perlunya membangun sistem visual yang dapat dikenali dan yang bersifat konsisten. Ketidakkonsistenan dapat menyebabkan Tempo kehilangan identitasnya dan membatasi keterlibatan pembaca. Pengembangan ilustrasi editorial untuk berbagai artikel di suatu edisi majalah Tempo merupakan salah satu pendekatan untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut. Tujuannya adalah untuk menciptakan gaya visual terpadu bagi majalah Tempo agar dapat diikuti oleh ilustrator lain, dengan mempertahankan standar visual yang dapat dikenali Tempo dan juga agar pembaca dapat mengenalinya. Dengan menggunakan kata kunci “surrealisme” dan “provokatif”, gaya visual yang konsisten serta tema warna dan motif visual yang konsisten menghasilkan ilustrasi editorial unik yang tidak hanya menyempurnakan Tempo dari segi visual, tetapi juga mempererat komunikasi antara penulis dan pembaca. / Illustration used to visually convey written content is recognized as editorial illustration. One of the most esteemed magazines in Indonesia, Tempo, utilizes editorial illustrations in order to make several of their articles have deeper meaning. The primary problem of Tempo's inconsistent visual style between magazine issues, is the need to establish a recognizable and consistent visual system. The inconsistency may lead the brand to lose its identity and limit reader engagement. Developing editorial illustrations for a variety of articles within a Tempo magazine edition is an approach to address this issue. The objective is to establish a unified visual style for the magazine that other illustrators can follow to, maintaining a visually recognizable standard that Tempo can withhold as well as for readers to become familiar with. Through the guidance of key words “surrealism” and “provocative”, a consistent visual style along with consistent color themes and visual motifs resulted in unique editorial illustrations that not only enhance Tempo from a visual perspective, but to also amplify communication between writer and reader.
