Abstract

This study examines women's interpersonal communication in building romantic relationships on the Bumble app using a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and observations of four female informants who have experienced romantic relationships on Bumble. Interpersonal communication theory and social penetration theory were employed to analyze the self-disclosure process in online dating. Findings indicate that the first move feature, which requires women to initiate the first conversation, provides them with initial control in communication. However, patriarchal culture in Indonesia influences women's ability to assume this initiating role, resulting in communication often being limited to brief introductions. Cultural barriers and gender expectations hinder the communication process from developing into deeper romantic relationships. In conclusion, although Bumble offers a platform for initial introductions, this feature has not yet supported the development of significant romantic relationships. Women's use of Bumble is often restricted to initial interactions rather than building long-term relationships. Future research is recommended to expand the scope to gain deeper insights into the phenomenon of Bumble dating app usage in Indonesia, particularly in the context of gender interactions and culture.
