Abstract

Media convergence brings up new forms of media that facilitate human activities into one media device. This convenience is enjoyed by children who are born as digital natives. To avoid the negative impact of media that lurks children, parents need to participate in the use of children's media. Such as controlling the screen time activity of children and stimulating the basic abilities of media literacy in young children. This research uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. Data collection was carried out through interviews and observations of as many as seven participants' families, which were determined through purposive sampling techniques. The results showed that parental participation was seen from the contributions and empowerment of parents in facilitating, arranging, and regulating the use of young children's media devices, as well as stimulating young children to talk and think related to the content consumed by them. The results of the study also identified five themes that illustrate parental participation: (1) The child's beginnings are familiar with media tools, (2) The habits of children using media devices, (3) Parental rules in using children's media devices, (4) Parent’s concerns, and (5) Parents as role models of children. / Konvergensi media melahirkan bentuk media baru yang memudahkan kegiatan manusia ke dalam satu perangkat media. Kemudahan ini turut dinikmati oleh anak- anak yang terlahir sebagai generasi digital natives. Untuk menghindari dampak negatif media yang mengintai anak-anak, orang tua perlu ikut berpartisipasi dalam penggunaan media anak. Seperti mengontrol aktivitas screen time anak dan merangsang kemampuan dasar literasi media pada anak sejak usia dini. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara dan observasi terhadap sebanyak tujuh keluarga partisipan, yang ditentukan dengan teknik purposive sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa partisipasi orang tua terlihat dari kontribusi dan pemberdayaan yang dilakukan orang tua dalam memfasilitasi, mengatur, dan meregulasi penggunaan perangkat media anak serta merangsang anak agar anak mau berbicara dan berpikir terkait konten yang dikonsumsi oleh mereka. Hasil penelitian juga mengidentifikasi lima tema yang menggambarkan partisipasi orang tua, yaitu: (1) Awal mula anak mengenal perangkat media, (2) Kebiasaan anak menggunakan perangkat media, (3) Aturan orang tua dalam penggunaan perangkat media anak, (4) Kekhawatiran orang tua, dan (5) Orang tua sebagai panutan anak.
