Abstract

Salah satu miskonsepsi terhadap kebahagiaan adalah bahwa semakin banyak material duniawi yang dimiliki, seseorang akan semakin bahagia. Pemahaman tersebut menciptakan tendensi materialistik, di mana dampak yang diakibatkan materialisme dapat berpengaruh ke psikis dan membuat seseorang beralih ke aktivitas ilegal maupun kejahatan. Berangkat dari hal tersebut, penulis kemudian memilih novel The Great Gatsby sebagai bahan studi kasus yang membahas materialisme. Media animasi merupakan salah satu medium efektif dalam menyampaikan pesan dan isu dengan cara yang menarik dan tidak terbatas. Dalam proses pembuatan film animasi, riset dan eksplorasi mendalam akan desain karakter dan setting merupakan tahap yang krusial, sehingga dibutuhkan konsep visual yang matang sebagai basis pembuatan film. Pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik studi pustaka dan riset mendalam menggunakan teori-teori serta prinsip desain. Melalui hal tersebut, penulis mengimplementasikan prinsip desain yang sesuai agar dapat mengkomunikasikan isu materialisme dalam The Great Gatsby secara visual. / One of the misconception about true happiness is that the more worldly materials that someone possess, the happier they will be. This kind of view creates a materialistic tendency, where the impact caused by materialism may affect someone’s mental and may cause them to shift to illegal activities and crime. From that point, the novel The Great Gatsby is chosen as a study case that discusses materialism. Animation is one of the most effective medium in communicating a message or issue in an interesting and limitless way. In the process of making an animation movie, deep research and exploration regarding character design and setting are a crucial phase, therefore a proper concept art is needed as the basis of film making. Data collecting is done using literature review and deep research using theories and principles of design. From then on, appropriate principles of design are implemented so that the issue from The Great Gatsby could be communicated well, visual wise.
