Abstract

The development of information technology, especially in new media communication, enables the presence of personas called influencers, who have the ability to influence other people. Alexander Thian, a travel influencer with more than 700,000 followers on Twitter and more than 450,000 followers on Instagram was the subject of this study. The purpose of this qualitative study is to find out the construction of impression management done by Alexander Thian on @amrazing Instagram account. This study utilized Erving Goffman's The Presentation of Self theory, Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotics to analyse the meaning behind symbols and signs, and Mark Leary's Self-presentation tactics. The results showed that Alexander Thian dominantly used public attribution and nonverbal behaviour tactics in his Instagram content uploads. Moreover, this study found in the future development of self-presentation tactics specific to special abilities. This can be a strong characteristic for influencers and give unique selling proposition as well in new media communication. / Perkembangan teknologi informasi terutama dalam komunikasi di media baru memungkinkan kehadiran persona yang disebut influencer karena kemampuannya mempengaruhi orang lain. Alexander Thian, travel influencer yang memiliki lebih dari 700.000 pengikut di Twitter dan lebih dari 450.000 pengikut di Instagram menjadi subyek penelitian. Penelitian kualitatif ini bertujuan mengetahui representasi citra diri yang dilakukan Alexander melalui akun Instagram @amrazing. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori presentasi diri Erving Goffman, menganalisa makna dibalik simbol dan tanda menggunakan semiotik Ferdinand de Saussure dan taktik presentasi diri Mark Leary. Hasil penelitian menyatakan Alexander Thian dominan menggunakan taktik penilaian publik (public attributions) dan taktik tingkah laku nonverbal (nonverbal behavior) dalam unggahannya di Instagram. Selain itu, penelitian menemukan taktik presentasi diri yang terus berkembang mengerucut pada kemampuan-kemampuan khusus yang dapat menjadi ciri khas bagi influencers dalam komunikasi di media baru.
