Abstract

After the Cold War ended, international trade become an issue that attract many countries attention. This phenomena symbolized by the creation of World Trade Organization (WTO) to deal with international trade matters. As the time goes by, international trade headed to the development of a new issue, international “free” trade, which means an international trade without barriers such as tarriffs or non- tarriffs barriers. Rapid growth showed by some countries in Asia Pasific or usually said as East Asian miracle caused trading in Asia Pasific become more intensive. This phenomena affected Indonesia as well. Since the reformation era in Indonesia, there are some agreements made by Indonesia towards free trade either bilaterally or multilaterally through international organization such as ASEAN. Indonesia even decide to create a free trade zone or usually called special economic zone/Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus (KEK) inside their territorry. Actually, there are two regions in Indonesia that have been chosen to be special economic zones, which are Sabang and Batam, Bintan, and Karimun (BBK). However, in the journey of globalization Sabang could not find its success in being special economic zone. On the other hand, BBK who is geographically close to Singapore took an advantage and developed rapidly. The development of BBK must be contributed in politics and economics for Indonesia, and also for Singapore as the number one trading partner of the region(BBK). The existence of this region is affecting the relations of Indonesia and Singapore in politics and economics as well. Thus, this research will explore what are the factors and reasons of Indonesia to make and choose such a region, the impact of this region to both countries in politics and economics, and the impact of this region to the relations between these two countries. This research conclude, there are few reasons for Indonesia to choose BBK as a special economic zone such as geographic factors. Moreover, this region also give some advantage and disadvantage either for Indonesia and Singapore. This region also being a bridge for good relations between Indonesia and Singapore in many aspects, especially in politics and economics.
