Abstract

Korean Wave or (Hallyu) is very popular in the 21 century. Initially, Korean dramas, movies, and music were popular only in South Korea. However, within the past ten years, this popular culture has gained huge appreciation from many people from many different countries in the world, including Indonesia. In Indonesia, Korean Wave started to sweep in 2002. Even though Korean Wave is part of foreign culture, many people now enthusiastically access Korean Wave products and find updates of their idols. The goal of this research is to provide comprehensive description of the acceptance and reaction of Indonesian youth toward Korean Wave from 2002 to 2012. Furthermore, this research also describes that the interaction between countries in this globalization era which is not anymore limited to ‘government to government’ interaction, but also ‘people to people’ interaction. It is giving insight that International Relations in today’s world involve multiple actors and issues. This research is using qualitative approach with descriptive analysis method. The data were gained from many sources of books, journals, articles, news, and also interview with six people who closely engaged with Korean Wave in Indonesia, especially in big cities. The theories which are used in this research include theory of constructivism, theory of soft power, and several other concepts such as globalization, public diplomacy, nation branding, and popular culture. The result of this research shows that Korean Wave is accepted by Indonesian youth. Nine manifestations that affirm this are: the access of people toward Korean Wave, the existence of virtual community for K-Wave followers, the existence of real community for K-Wave followers in society, the attendance of thousands of people in Korean Pop concerts in Jakarta, the availability of books and magazines related to Korean Wave, the existence of Indonesia boy and girl bands with Korea Pop characteristics, the existence of Indonesian drama series with Korean Drama characteristics, interest in learning language, and interest Korean life style, fashion, and tourism.
