Abstract

Aromatherapy is known to have an effect on increasing memory function. The ability to memorize things plays an important role for university students when learning in class. This is to be able to understand the topics during the short period of time. 1,8-cineole is one the component of aromatherapy with rosemary extract that has an effect on the olfactory and lombic system which is the site of memory formation in the brain. This research is to find out the relation between the usage of rosemary aromatherapy towards short term memory function of medical students in Pelita Harapan University batch 2015 – 2017. This is a quantitative experimental analytic study to find out the relationship between the usage of rosemary aromatherapy towards short term memory function. The subject of this experiment requires 32 people that will be divided into two groups: intervention and control from the population of medical student batch 2015 – 2017 in Pelita Harapan University. This experiment is using a pre and post test design using Picture-memory Test to asses the memory function. Analysis will be done using T-test Dependent. The result shows there is an increase of 1 object from the first to the second Picture Memory test. This is seen in the Intervention group of samples that has been given rosemary aromatherapy. The result of the analysis is significant with a P-value of <0.05. The intervention group shows more significance than the Control group. In conclusion, there is an increase in short-term memory function shown in groups of sample that is given with Rosemary Aromatherapy. Hence, Aromatherapy with rosemary extract can increase short term memory function / Aromaterapi dikenal memiliki kemampuan meningkatkan fungsi memori. Mahasiswa memerlukan fungsi memori yang baik. Jenis memori yang biasa digunakan oleh mahasiswa pada saat belajar di kelas adalah memori jangka pendek untuk menangkap pelajaran dengan cepat agar tidak tertinggal. Aromaterapi rosemary memiliki kandungan 1,8-cineole yang berpengaruh pada beberapa komponen di otak yaitu sistem olfaktorius dan sistem limbik dimana memiliki peran dalam fungsi memori jangka pendek. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada tidaknya hubungan antara penggunaan aromaterapi rosemary terhadap fungsi memori jangka pendek pada mahasiswa fakultas kedokteran UPH angkatan 2015-2017. Penelitian ini merupakan studi kuantitatif eksperimental analitik untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari penggunaan aromaterapi rosemary terhadap fungsi memori jangka pendek. Subjek penelitian membutuhkan sampel sebesar 32 orang yang akan dibagi menjadi kelompok kontrol dan kelompok intervensi dari populasi mahasiswa FK UPH. Eksperimen dirancang menggunakan pre-test dan post-test design dengan picture-memory test. Uji statistik yang digunakan adalah metode Uji T-test Dependen. Terdapat peningkatan hasil Picture memory test dari percobaan pertama ke percobaan kedua sebanyak rata-rata 1 objek pada kelompok Intervensi yang telah diberi aromaterapi rosemary secara signifikan dibanding kelompok kontrol (P<0.05). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan penggunaan aromaterapi rosemary dapat meningkatkan fungsi memori jangka pendek.
