Abstract

The Indonesia’s Foreign Policy term “Free and Active” was coined by Indonesia’s first vice president Mohammad Hatta in 1948 as a response to the polarism of the Cold War. Under second period of presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia remains hold unto this principle and set priorities in order to achieve its national objectives. Those priorities were set based on two aspects, such as, Indonesia’s economic interests and also political interests. Indonesia which acknowledged by its strong economy and largest population, then, is expected to offer more of its role to the international community, especially in Indonesia’s last chairmanship of ASEAN (2011). As the world becoming more integrated whether politically or economically in this 21st century, therefore, the need to analyze the issues is very high. The implementation of theory liberalism and others supported concepts like foreign policy is needed in order to create a comprehensive analysis upon this issues. Based on the analysis made by the author, such theory and concepts are still relevant and also able to explain the current phenomenon which happening in ASEAN right now, things like how the possibility of states to create such cooperation within its region in order to achieve its national interests. This thesis, therefore, may conclude numbers of important matters. Firstly, Indonesia’s foreign policy priorities which has been set into two, thus, has triggerred the creation of strategies made by Indonesia towards ASEAN. The purpose to create such strategies is to facilitate Indonesia in achieving its national interests. By using this strategies, Indonesia may strengthen its role in ASEAN by supporting the establishment of ASEAN Community in 2015. Secondly, several contributions that Indonesia achieved in its last chairmanship in 2011 have been believed to be the way for Indonesia to enhance the progress of regional integration in ASEAN, which also lead to the strengthening process of centrality of ASEAN. This centrality covers several issues in how ASEAN dealing its relationship with major powers around the world, which actually in the same way explaining the objectives of Indonesia’s foreign policy in ASEAN.
